Dr. Richard Whitlock, the principal investigator of the LAAOS III trial, emphasized that his preferred method to achieve left atrial appendage exclusion is surgical occlusion during cardiac surgery in patients with atrial fibrillation who are at risk of stroke.
The LAAOS III trial demonstrated that prophylactic LAA occlusion during heart surgery significantly reduces the long-term risk of stroke in patients with AF.
